Book Love

library booksYesterday, for my 26th birthday, I wrote 26 life lessons I’ve learned (or am still learning) recently. Number eight on that list was an encouragement to keep reading, and number sixteen was to get a library card.

In light of those recommendations, I thought I’d share some wonderful books with you to add to your to-read list.

People have a vast aray of reading preferences. One of our neighbors likes to read textbooks. He’s already graduated from college, but he reads textbooks for fun. His wife, a biomedical engineer, likes to read romance novels.

library booksI think people should read what they enjoy and what helps them reach their goals. I differentiate because I don’t always enjoy personal finance books, but having a greater understanding of investments is one of my personal goals, so I read them occasionally.book3My favorite things to read are things that stir the imagination. I definitely enjoy poetry and stories more than I do finance. Non-fiction, fiction, historical, current… I enjoy all kinds of stories.

But here are three in particular which I have recently enjoyed:

  • Outlander. Oh my goodness it’s amazing. It is such a good story. If you read it, you will fall in love with the characters. Gabaldon is an incredible writer. I’ll issue one disclaimer about this book, and it is the same disclaimer my mother gave to me, it is more appropriate to read after you’re married. That said, I brought it on my honeymoon, and I have read it multiple times since.
  • The Boys in the Boat. My dad actually read this one first and recommended it to me. If you enjoyed Seabiscuit or Unbreakable, you’ll definitely enjoy this book too! It takes place in the same time period and it’s also an incredibly inspiring story.
  • Beauty. Ah, how I love this book. I think I read it first in high school, but I’ve read it so many times since then, I’ve lost count. It’s one of my favorites. I love Beauty and the Beast. I mean, a princess who reads! What’s not to love? And Robin McKinley wrote a lovely re-telling. It would also be worth reading and reminding yourself of this magical fairy tale because… next year (well, actually not until 2017) the live action movie, starring Emma Watson comes out! I’m counting down already.

I’m actively trying to read more as well. School likes to get in the way but I’ve managed somehow! I just finished reading a historical book “Dead Wake” about the last voyage of the Lusitania which was great! I think lately I tend more toward historical books and the classics–I would like to read more of them. I will be taking your recs into consideration as well…I’m always looking for new titles to add to my wishlist! Thanks for sharing!
